Durant’s 30 help Thunder put Bulls away 106-95

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP)—Kevin Cheap Air Max Durant(notes) scored 30 points, Russell Westbrook(notes) added 28 points and 10 rebounds and the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the new-look Chicago Bulls 106-95 on Wednesday night in the season opener for both teams. Durant and Westbrook each powered down two-handed dunks during a late 11-0 surge that put the game away. Neither team had led by more than eight before Oklahoma City started pulling away in the final 3 minutes. Westbrook raced down the court for his slam after Serge Ibaka(notes) swatted away Derrick Rose’s(notes) shot, then turned it into a three-point play. The next trip down the court, Durant blew by Luol Deng(notes) for his own jam. Jeff Green’s(notes) 3-pointer from the right corner made it 104-91 with 89 seconds left. Rose scored 28 points to lead the Bulls in Tom Thibodeaux’s debut as head coach. He had only four points in the final 21 minutes, his hot start cooled off by foul trouble. Free agent acquisition Carlos Boozer(notes) sported a cast on his broken right hand, but the rest of the Bulls’ overhauled roster kept it close throughout against reigning scoring champion Durant and the rest of the Thunder. Chicago brought in eight new players after last season’s trip to the playoffs, while Daequan Cook(notes) was the only newcomer to get on the floor for Oklahoma City. The Thunder got a brief scare at the end of the third quarter when Durant fell hard on his rear end after being called for charging into Chicago’s Ronnie Brewer(notes). He stayed down for a few moments before hobbling off the court. Trainers stretched his legs during the break between the quarters and then had him sit on an ice pack. Durant walked to the scorer’s table to check into the game with only 3 minutes elapsed in the fourth quarter. It wasn’t long before he got fouled on the fast break and hit a pair of free throws to put Oklahoma City up 88-87, and the Thunder wouldn’t trail again. Rose answered Durant’s jumper to UGG Coquette Slipper get Chicago within 93-91 with 3:26 remaining, but Oklahoma City closed it out from there. Jeff Green added 21 points and Eric Maynor(notes) scored 10 on a perfect shooting night—3 for 3 from the field and 4 for 4 on free throws. Joakim Noah(notes) had 19 points and 18 rebounds, Taj Gibson(notes) added 16 points and 11 rebounds and Deng scored 13 for Chicago. Rose got the Bulls out to a hot start, hitting consecutive reverse layups in the midst of five made shots in a row, before heading to the bench with two first-quarter fouls. Oklahoma City then fired off a 13-4 run that featured dunks by Westbrook, Ibaka and Durant to finish the first quarter up by five. When Rose returned, he immediately started digging the Bulls out of an eight-point hole and put them back ahead 46-45 with a pair of free throws he earned by getting fouled on another reverse layup try. The Thunder led 59-54 at halftime after Green scored 10 points in UGG Elsey wedge Boots the final 2:38 before the break, but then gave up an 8-0 run to start the third quarter.

Beckham says he’ll play out contract in LA

By BETH HARRIS AP Sports Writer LOS ANGELES(AP)—David Nike Shox shoes Beckham plans to play out the final year of his contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2011 while continuing to hope he’ll play for England again. Beckham said in an interview with The Associated Press on Monday that he doesn’t know what will happen after his contract expires next year. “I want to play as long as my legs can take me,” he said. “I know it sounds a cliche, but I love playing soccer, I love playing the game, it’s my passion. When I stop enjoying it then I’ll know I need to stop.” Beckham has a five-year contract with Major League Soccer worth $32.5 million. He could buy out the final year and leave next month when the playoffs end. “I’m definitely going to be here for the rest of my contract,” he said. “My sons go to school here, we’re all happy living here, so I can’t see us moving.” The former England captain would hurry home, though, if England coach Fabio Capello called on him to play for his country again. Beckham is England’s most experienced active player with 115 international appearances. “I’d love to continue to play. Whether I do or not, that is obviously down to the manager and obviously down to myself to perform,” he said. Beckham won’t go on loan to a European team like he did with AC Milan the last two years to keep fit during the MLS offseason, which could dash his hopes of playing for England again. The Galaxy won’t allow another loan after his Achilles’ tendon injury kept him out of most of this season. “I would love to say that I’d be able to, but with the injury that I’ve had you have to give it a certain amount of rest,” Beckham said. Capello has suggested he wants to rejuvenate the England team with younger players and will only consider Beckham for a farewell match in an exhibition. This month, he dismissed the suggestion that UGG Amelie Sandals Beckham has played himself into contention. Asked if Capello has fairly considered him, Beckham said, “He’s a fair man. He gives everyone a chance.” The 35-year-old superstar says he is “80 to 85 percent” fit after tearing his left Achilles’ tendon while on loan in March. He was sidelined for six months and missed the World Cup in South Africa. “It’s obviously difficult to come back from,” he said. “I’ve been playing just over a month now and the fitness level is almost there.” The Galaxy open the playoffs next Sunday at Seattle. Beckham scored the tying goal in the team’s 2-1 weekend victory over FC Dallas to help them finish with the league’s best record of 18-7-5. Last year, the Galaxy lost on penalty kicks to Real Salt Lake in the MLS Cup final. “I wouldn’t say we’re favorites,” he said. “I believe we’ve got the right team, we’ve got the right manager, so everything sets up right. It’s just about us performing on the field.” The severity of his injury has kept Beckham from thinking too far into the future, especially when it comes to making the rosters for Euro 2012 or the World Cup in 2014. “At the moment, I’m just taking each game as it comes,” he said. Beckham will join the Galaxy for its friendly in Newcastle, Australia, next month. His latest injury is one of many that have knocked Beckham out since he arrived to unbelievable hype four years ago, stating his goal was to raise soccer’s profile in the United States. “We wanted to grow the league, which we have,” he said, citing new MLS franchises, new soccer-specific stadiums and international players who’ve followed him stateside as proof of the growth. “I always said it wasn’t going to UGG Handbags take a year or two. It’s going to take five, 10 years to be able to get up to a level which could compete with the European leagues. So far, so good.” Beckham spent Monday in a Hollywood studio doing promotional work for EA Sports Active 2, a line of interactive fitness products set to debut Nov. 19 in Europe and Australia. Wearing a heart rate monitor and a motion sensor, he did a boxing and mountain biking workout with his heart rate and calories burned posted on-screen when he was done.

An Afghan Taliban commander feels NATO's heat, but it could backfire

He rarely sleeps twice in air max Shoes the same place, and tosses away his cellphones almost as often as he changes houses. He can't stay in close contact with the foot soldiers who report to him. And he wonders, sometimes uneasily, whether his leaders are looking to cut a deal with the people who are trying to kill him. Midlevel Taliban field operatives such as Commander H., who leads a cell of fighters outside the southern city of Kandahar, are acutely aware that they are being hunted more intensely than ever before: The NATO-led force in Afghanistan says that in the last three months, it has killed or captured hundreds of insurgent commanders and thousands of lower-level fighters. Increasingly, the Western alliance's effort to find a way out of the deadlocked conflict in Afghanistan centers on a two-track approach: seeking to devastate the Taliban field-command structure while trying to woo the movement's leaders to the bargaining table. But some analysts, officials, diplomats and other observers say this strategy could backfire, perhaps even providing the insurgency with fresh impetus, stronger motivation and more recruits. They point out that the loose and decentralized nature of the insurgency means that many of those on the battlefield have no real pipeline to the upper echelon. And it is not at all clear that the Taliban fighters on the ground feel it's time to make a deal. Commander H., for example, insists that his troops are ready to continue the battle, and says that he himself could be readily replaced if he were killed or captured. He succeeded an older cousin who was UGG Sundance II Boots killed last year, and said avenging that death and other killings and destruction of property guides his belief that the fight must go on until all foreign troops have left Afghan soil. NATO's International Security Assistance Force routinely reports the capture or death of several Taliban "leaders" a day, wording that suggests they are senior figures, with a role in shaping the movement's overall aims. But Commander H., answering questions through an intermediary, described his role in the fighting in almost workaday terms. He and others like him, he said, are men who organize the planting of roadside bombs, the Taliban's signature weapon. They move arms from one place to another; they keep Western troops in their district under close surveillance; they stage occasional ambushes, often merely to give the impression that their own numbers are greater than they actually are. Western officials contend that the high-tempo campaign of targeted strikes on operatives such as Commander H. is sowing doubt and disarray in the ranks of the Taliban. And that, they believe, is key to "softening up" the insurgency, making its leaders more receptive to peace overtures. More explicitly than at any point in the 9-year-old war, senior U.S. and other Western officials are describing a negotiated settlement with the Taliban as not only necessary but perhaps inevitable. Army Gen. David H. Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, has disclosed that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization force had gone so far Ugg Kids Classic Tall-Boots as to ensure safe passage for high-level Taliban figures to informal meetings between them and associates of Afghan President Hamid Karzai. But the Afghan government's much-touted effort to lure insurgents from the battlefield with financial and other incentives has largely foundered, despite Western encouragement and cash commitments. When asked about the government "reconciliation" program, Commander H. laughed. He also suggested that he and fellow fighters, facing heavy pressure from the large-scale Western offensive in Kandahar province, would fall back on a favored tactic: melting away in the face of superior force, then reinfiltrating when it suited them. "We have long experience in this," he said. "We can change our location, we can come and go, we can leave behind land mines that will kill them. Yes, they are many, but with only a few, we can make great problems for them." Western and Afghan officials are increasingly touting their success against the Taliban command structure, especially in the south. "Their networks have been shattered," Col. Nasrullah Garumsir, a senior police official in Kandahar, told reporters last week. Those familiar with the Taliban's inner workings acknowledge that the effects of NATO's campaign against the Islamic movement's field leaders are being felt, but doubted that battle fatigue or losses in the lower command ranks alone would bring the militants to the bargaining table. "Of course it makes it more difficult to UGG Amelie Sandals fight, to stay organized, when commanders are getting killed," said Waheed Mojda, a member of the Taliban government that was ousted in 2001. "But experience shows they can always find new ones." Taliban leaders believe they have made significant gains, both in territorial terms and their ability to bloody the NATO force. They point with satisfaction to Western combat deaths, which are running at their highest levels since the start of the war, and the fact that they have been able to push into more parts of the country during the last two years, even as the Western force was doubling in size. Observers also point out that one of the Taliban movement's hallmarks is its ability to regenerate itself. It bounced back, after all, from the devastating blow of the U.S.-led invasion, steadily gaining strength over the last several years. "In 2006, officials were estimating that the Taliban were as low as a few thousand strong, and today [the NATO force] estimates the Taliban as 35,000 to 40,000," said Matthew Waldman, an analyst who recently wrote a report on the prospect of negotiations. "One of the points we have to bear in mind is they have a very large pool of recruits inside Afghanistan and Pakistan." Furthermore, as Waldman and others point out, the emerging commanders are younger and in many cases more hard-line than their pragmatic elder brothers, the ones being killed and captured. The average age of midlevel commanders is thought to have dropped from the mid-30s to the mid-20s. But strong Taliban denials that UGG Handbags contacts are taking place suggest that the leadership is worried about a loss of morale in the ranks if preliminary talks turn into real negotiations. "We hope this is not the truth, that this talk of negotiations is propaganda and rumors," said Commander H. "Because the infidels are still here in the land."

Mysterious Gunfire Shatters Windows at Pentagon, but No One Is Hurt

WASHINGTON — Shots Nike Shox shoes were fired at the Pentagon early Tuesday, a spokesman said, causing minor damage to the building but no injuries. A security guard heard what sounded like five gunshots shortly before 5 a.m., according to Chris Layman, a spokesman for the Pentagon Force Protection Agency, which guards the building. The shots damaged the outside of a south wall of the Pentagon, with shell fragments embedded in two windows, Mr. Layman said. The impact shattered the windows. Investigators were trying to determine whether there was a connection between the Pentagon shooting and an incident in which shots were fired at the National Museum of the Marine Corps over the weekend. Steven Calvery, the director of the agency, said at a news conference that officials considered the Pentagon shooting “a random event.” The agency closed all access to the building for nearly an hour and conducted sweeps of the area with Arlington County police officers, though nothing related to the shooting was found, Mr. Layman said. Interstate 395 was also temporarily closed. “For safety measures, we didn’t want anyone leaving or coming into the building,” Mr. Layman said. He said investigators were still UGG Classic Short Patent Paisley Boots trying to determine what type of gun was used in the shooting. Bullet holes were discovered Monday in a wall of the Marine Corps museum in Triangle, Va. According to a police spokesman in Prince William County, where the museum is located, the shots were fired late at night on Sunday, when no one was inside. Several bullet holes could be seen in the glass, and damage was estimated at $20,000.

Cowboys' ineptitude beyond owner's wildest dreams

Jerry Jones' dream to uggs sale be the owner of the first team to play a Super Bowl in its own stadium has turned into The Nightmare at Valley Ranch. And we're still two weeks away from Halloween. Their season quickly slipping away, the Cowboys sustained a 24-21 loss at the Vikings on Sunday that left a team viewed as a powerhouse with a sickly 1-4 record. In his darkest moment, Jones couldn't have imagined this predicament. "Never. Never. Never," Jones said Sunday night. "I couldn't have conceived it." It's almost incomprehensible that a team filled with as many playmakers and Pro Bowl players as the Cowboys have would have only one victory six weeks into the season. The problem is they're making more mistakes than big plays. The Cowboys have shot themselves in their feet so often, it's surprising they're still ambulatory. Dallas came into the game as one of the most penalized teams (38) in the league. It only added to that distinction Sunday, committing 11 penalties for 91 yards. "We beat ourselves for the fourth time this year," said wide receiver Roy Williams, whose two touchdown receptions Sunday made him one of the rare standouts for Dallas. "We beat ourselves one more time. How many times are we going to do it?" Among the most grievous Dallas transgressions were: -- A pass-interference penalty against wide receiver Austin Miles that wiped out his own 68-yard touchdown. -- A holding penalty on a punt return against Alan Ball that pushed the Cowboys back to their own 14-yard line instead of starting at the Minnesota 42. -- A pass-interference penalty against UGG Bailey Button Boots cornerback Mike Jenkins—his second of the game—after Dallas ostensibly had stopped the Vikings on third down with just over two minutes left, allowing Minnesota to bleed the clock down to 29 seconds before punting. And that doesn't count an unsportsmanlike conduct foul against Austin for excessive celebration after the Cowboys' first touchdown. That made two such penalties on back-to-back touchdowns (going back to the previous week) against Dallas, surely some kind of record. What can the Cowboys do to rid themselves of this horrible affliction? Call in a priest to conduct an exorcism? "We used to jump up and down with our hands beside our body, keep your hands down, and had to jump like jumping jacks," Jones said, recalling his days as a football player at the University of Arkansas. "There are all sorts of ways to emphasize it and work on it." Last week, Jones gave Cowboys coach Wade Phillips the sometimes jinxing "vote of confidence." He maintained that stance after Sunday's game, confirming that he would not consider firing Phillips during the season. "I just simply don't think that way and would never—never is a big word—consider that during the season." Jones said. "Today has not altered my thought about the coaching for the rest of the season." Although Jones refused to declare the playoffs out of the question for his frustrated team, the Cowboys would have to win their next three games—vs. the Giants and Jaguars at home and the Packers on the road—just to reach .500. History is not on their side. Since the current, 12-team UGG Coquette Slipper playoff format was adopted in 1990, only five teams that began their season 1-4 reached the postseason—and none made it to the Super Bowl.
