Australia faces confident Uzbekistan in Asian Cup

DOHA, Qatar (AP)—Uzbekistan coach Vadim Abramov discount ugg boot came out fighting on Monday ahead of his side’s Asian Cup semifinal match against an Australia team he regards as “good but not Brazil.” The Uzbeks have been widely labeled as underdogs in Tuesday’s encounter with Australia, which is the top-ranked team in Asia and beat Uzbekistan twice in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup. But while Australia may play in predominantly yellow shirts, that is where the comparisons with five-time world champion Brazil end, according to Abramov. “Uzbekistan can play also, no problem,” he said. “Before this tournament, I said we could win the cup. That hasn’t changed. “Japan beat Argentina (in an October friendly), so why can’t Uzbekistan beat Australia? It’s 50-50. Each team has the same chance.” Both sides are playing their first Asian Cup semifinal. Australia went out in the last eight on its debut in 2007. Uzbekistan’s previous best was quarterfinal appearances in 2004 and 2007. Australia was one of the pre-tournament favorites, thanks to a squad including Premier League stars Tim Cahill and Mark Schwarzer and several other players with European experience. It negotiated its group without ever really hitting top form, and then overcame an obdurate Iraq side in the quarterfinals with a Harry Kewell goal three minutes from the end of extra time. In those four matches, Holger Osieck’s team has conceded one goal, but scored only seven—four of those against India. Uzbekistan midfielder Odil Ahmedov believes his 2010 handbag team can exploit Australia’s weaknesses, where others have failed. “We know the Australia team very well and we’re not afraid of them,” he said. “I noticed Iraq and other teams had many chances to score against Australia but they couldn’t do it. I think we can do it better. “I’m very happy to have reached the semifinals but we’re not going to stop here. We’re going to go to the final and to get our cup.” Australia has been wary of making such bold statements at this tournament, having been accused of overconfidence in 2007, but coach Osieck thinks his team is “strong enough” to beat Uzbekistan. “We don’t really feel pressure,” he said. “There’s a kind of excitement about the game, it’s going to be an interesting and challenging one. “We know what we can do. We’ve had our talks, we have our plan. I know our boys are in position to transfer everything onto the pitch.” Osieck confirmed that Cahill, who came off at the end of normal time against Iraq with a thigh injury, would start against Uzbekistan, which also has no injury worries. Goalkeeper Schwarzer will make his 87th appearance for Australia, equaling the record set by Alex Tobin and underlining the experience Australia has at its disposal. Captain Lucas Neill, the 32-year-old former Blackburn and Everton fullback, believes the switch to the Asian confederation from Oceania and the opportunity to play at the Asian Cup can only help further improve Australian football. “It’s a great opportunity for us to win a trophy,” he said. “I don’t think we’ve ever been able to say that as a nation. “(The switch to Asia) has been very good for us, it’s Nike Dunk SB Low Shoes given us a lot more competitive games to play. It wasn’t easy to be respected when you went to Fiji and won 8-0. There’s a lot of respect to be gained from playing tournaments like this. For the game, it’s great for confidence and raising the bar in the level of performance in Australia.”

Sunderland snatch draw with Newcastle

LONDON (AFP) - An injury-time ugg boots goal from Sunderland's Ghanaian international Asamoah Gyan denied Newcastle home-and-away victories over their northeast rivals as Birmingham and Aston Villa drew in the Premier League on Sunday. Newcastle, seeking to bounce back from their shock FA Cup exit to lowly Stevenage last week, looked to be heading to a 1-0 victory over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light after a Kevin Nolan goal put them ahead. But with the game deep into injury time World Cup star Gyan scrambled in a fortunate equaliser to make it 1-1 and deny Newcastle a famous win. Nolan, who scored a hat-trick in Newcastle's 5-1 thrashing of Sunderland in October, was the Black Cats tormentor once again, firing the Magpies ahead on 52 minutes. The midfielder pounced after a cross by Joey Barton was headed down by Shola Ameobi to cause panic in the Sunderland defence, allowing Nolan to backheel in from close range. Yet just as Newcastle's travelling fans prepared to celebrate victory, Gyan popped up in injury time with his eighth goal of the season after a rare mistake by Newcastle keeper Steve Harper. In Sunday's other early game, Aston Villa fought back from 1-0 down to secure a vital point in their derby clash with Birmingham at St Andrews. Birmingham, who handed a debut to new signing Cheap Air Max David Bentley, took the lead on 49 minutes when Roger Johnson volleyed in from 12 yards past Brad Friedel. The Blues looked to be in control of the game and heading for victory until Villa equalised against the run of play, when a cross by Marc Albrighton was touched on by Gabriel Agbonlahor before being swept home by James Collins. Villa might even have snatched an unlikely victory in the final 10 minutes, when Nathan Delfounso hammered a 25-yard shot against the crossbar. In Sunday's other games, Liverpool take on Merseyside rivals Everton in Kenny Dalglish's first home match in charge at Anfield since taking over from Roy Hodgson last week. The late game sees top of the table Manchester United travel to Tottenham for an eagerly awaited first versus fifth clash at White Hart Lane.

Inside, the crowd of 78,603 set a University of Phoenix Stadium record, easily eclipsing the 74,628 who watched the 2007 BCS championship game between Florida and Ohio State. Then there were an estimated 20,000 next door at Westgate Center watching on a giant screen as No. 1 Auburn beat No. 2 Oregon 22-19. Coach Gene Chizik praised the “Auburn Family” that crossed the country to cheer on the Tigers. Auburn had a bigger contingent inside the stadium. “Those 30- or 40,000 fans that came into that stadium tonight,” he said, “and probably another 10,000 that were outside and probably another 10,000 that wanted to come back home but couldn’t get here.” The attendance for all bowl games totaled 1,822,000, topping 1.8 million for the first time. The old record of 1.774 million was set in the 2008-09 bowl season. FLYING DUCK: Lost in the frenzy of the wild finish of Monday night’s game was the big passing night for Oregon freshman Darron Thomas. With Auburn shutting down the normally potent Oregon running game, the Ducks were forced to throw more than usual. Thomas set career highs in yards (363), completions (27) and attempts (40). His two interceptions matched a career high. His 363 yards passing were the second-most in a BCS championship game, exceeded only by Matt Leinart’s 365 for USC against Texas in 2006. The tribute came during ceremonies shortly before winter ugg boots Monday night’s kickoff. Charter flights out of Birmingham Airport were able to take off by midday. On campus, both classes and the viewing party scheduled at Auburn Arena were canceled. Tigers fan James Harrison made it to Arizona from Charlotte, N.C., but hadn’t been able to reach friends trying to get there. “I know people who were sleeping in the airport at Birmingham,” Harrison said. “Who knows if they made it or not?” Chase Payne said he had friends who were scheduled to fly out of Birmingham but drove a few hours to either Memphis, Tenn., or New Orleans to catch other flights. “They said lots of people have been doing this,” Payne said. One Alabama resident who didn’t get to make the trip: Gov. Bob Riley, who didn’t want to leave after declaring a state of emergency in Alabama on Sunday. He encouraged Alabama residents to stay home Monday night and “enjoy the Auburn game.” CECIL NEWTON: The contingent of Cam Newton’s family Nike shox NZ attending the game didn’t include the quarterback’s father, Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs said. Cecil Newton was restricted to “limited access” to the school’s athletic program when the NCAA found that he shopped his son’s services to Mississippi State during the recruiting process. He also skipped the Heisman ceremony in New York. Jacobs said the decision for Cecil Newton not to attend “was mutually agreed upon. Out of the highest respect that Cecil has for Cameron, he won’t be here today.” Newton had said that his father would be among the contingent traveling from Georgia for the game, but that he didn’t know if Cecil Newton would be attending the game. He said the Newton group would be “loud and proud.” ALUM CAPTAINS: Bo Jackson and Ahmad Rashad were the honorary captains for the BCS title game. NFL-Sanchez again toast of Broadway after piloting Jets to win

INDIANAPOLIS, Jan 9 (Reuters) - Playing on NFL jerseys a stage where you are only as good as your last performance, New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez(notes) was again the toast of Broadway on Saturday, after winning a 17-16 wild-card thriller over the Indianapolis Colts. New York crowds have always been among the most fickle audiences and Sanchez had received several bad reviews during a rollercoaster season that saw him battle shoulder injuries and come close to being benched. But Sanchez delivered when it mattered most, engineering a late drive that ended with Nick Folk(notes) booting a 32-yard field goal as time expired to send the Jets through to the divisional playoffs next Sunday against the New England Patriots. Taken by New York with the fifth overall pick in the 2009 draft, Sanchez stepped into the leading role as a rookie last year and remained on a steep learning curve during his cheap men boots sophomore campaign. But Jets coach Rex Ryan gave his quarterback’s effort two thumbs up after he displayed the type of self-assurance and swagger against the Colts that had been missing a year ago when they lost to Indianapolis in the AFC championship game and missed a trip to the Super Bowl. Ryan pointed to one play late in the game as an example Sanchez’s blossoming confidence and ability. Trailing 16-14 with 53 seconds left on the clock, the Jets were not done, Antonio Cromartie(notes) returning a Colts kickoff 47-yards before Sanchez took over finding Braylon Edwards(notes) with an 18-yard pass to move Folk within range. “As the game went on he got sharper and sharper,” Ryan told reporters. “The last pass to Braylon Edwards, the kid made that call on his own. “Shotty (Jets offensive co-coordinator Brain Schottenheimer) just said, ‘Alright kid you throw the ball you want!’ and then he made that huge throw. “That’s how much he has grown up.” Sanchez finished the night with modest numbers, completing 18 of 31 pass attempts for 189-yards with one interception and no touchdowns. But he would not buckle under the crushing pressure, tossing a pin-point strike to Edwards that he admitted later he might not have been able to deliver a year ago. “It’s a ‘got to have it’ situation,” explained Sanchez. “There are a few plays for every quarterback in their playbook. “For Peyton Manning(notes) I am sure there are a million more but for me there are a select few plays that I really feel good about. “You kind of have those in you toolbox. “You go to it in your time of need. We needed it. “I know I could have made the throw last year. I just don’t Air Yeeyz Shoes know if I could have made the call.”

Oilers snap losing streak with 2-1 win over Islanders

EDMONTON - Former Edmonton Oilers' coach uggs boot Craig MacTavish always liked to say, “You never critique a win,” but we’re not behind the bench, so we’ll just say it was Ho 2, Hum 1 Thursday night at Rexall Place. Let the record show the Oilers halted their seven-game losing streak by holding off the New York Islanders, getting two goals on their first three shots by Gilbert Brule(notes) and Dustin Penner(notes) before the game was six minutes old. They killed off seven penalties, including a five-on-three for 99 seconds in the final five minutes, with two of their five healthy defencemen Ladislav Smid(notes) and Tom Gilbert(notes) gnawing at their fingernails in the penalty box. Let us also say that Oilers goalie Devan Dubnyk(notes) lasted longer and was a whole lot better than Islanders starter Nathan Lawson(notes), who made his way to the bench after Brule’s goalmouth shot, and Penner’s short-handed burst eluded him. He was replaced by fellow rookie Kevin NBA jerseys Poulin(notes), who was playing in his first NHL game. Dubnyk, who had six of his previous 10 games go to overtime or shootout, refused to let this one go past 60 minutes He was good early; also good late, stopping Michael Grabner(notes) on a breakaway 90 seconds in, then making a couple of excellent saves during the five-on-three, only allowing Blake Comeau(notes)’s perfect shot in period two, off a Rob Schremp(notes) feed. But this was a yawner, folks. It was the 28th-place Oilers versus the 29th-place Islanders, a long way from the glory days of both clubs 25 years ago, although both teams wore their throwback jerseys and Rod Phillips was in the 630 CHED booth doing one of his 10 Rod’s Classic’s games in Hermes Scarf his farewell season. It was far from a classic, but you don’t always get truth in advertising when the puck drops. “Our penalty-kill won us the game,” said current Oilers coach Tom Renney, who didn’t try to sugar-coat the victory. Five-on-five, he didn’t like his team much after their early start, especially in the last two periods, and in the faceoff circle they got killed and chased all night long. Zenon Konopka(notes) was 11-0 and only played eight minutes. Schremp was 13-5. The Isles, who came in on a 7-1-1 run, won 39 of 59 draws and had 31 shots, but only had the one goal. In large part because of Dubnyk. “He really stood tall,” said Renney. Literally (he’s six-foot-six) and figuratively, although he’ll likely watch tonight in Vancouver as Nikolai Khabibulin(notes) gets back in the net. Tall in the first minute, especially. Grabner could have deflated the Oilers bench with his burst. “Good way to get into the game, but only Broncos NFL Jerseys if you save it,” laughed Dubnyk. The Islanders had 15 of their 31 shots on the power play, with 10:42 of five-on-four and 1:39 two-men up when Smid got his third minor (interference, tripping, roughing) and Gilbert cleared it into the seats by mistake. With Jim Vandermeer(notes) (a recurrence of his sprained ankle) gone, they were down to Theo Peckham(notes), Jason Strudwick(notes) and Jeff Petry(notes) to kill off the five-on-three. But the Oilers killed it off, the sixth straight game they’ve refused to give up a power-play goal after a terrible PK to start the year. “It’s one of the worst feelings when you Red Monkey Jeans do that, especially when you can watch it go over the glass and there’s no complaining,” said Gilbert, who played almost half the game (28:43). “The key to the penalty kill is your goalie and Devan’s been great all year. He’s come a long way,” said Andrew Cogliano(notes), who set up both goals, giving him five points in his last six games. His pass to Penner sprung him for his bolt down the left side after Dubnyk had cleared the puck over the glass. “When he’s skating and he’s so big, nobody’s really stopping him. We haven’t had one of those short-handed goals in a while either.” Sam Gagner(notes) had the last Boss Sweater one, on Dec. 1 in Montreal.
